On Stranger Tides; 2011 release date

So, at Disney's version of Comic Con, D23 Disney Fan Expo (which I sooooooooo badly wanted to go to!), they announced that Pirates 4 will be released summer of 2011, and the subtitle will be "On Stranger Tides."

And a quote:

Johnny Depp

"Obviously virtually no cinema's perfect so 'Pirates One' had its own thing, 'Two' and 'Three,' I suppose, had their own thing and it got a little confusing here and there in the story, not that I've seen the movies, but I hear tell," Depp says. "I think, for me, because I love the character so much and I enjoy playing the character so much and people seem to like it, if there's an opportunity to try again, you know, it's like going up to bat. You want to get back out there and try and try and try and see what you can do. I enjoy playing Captain Jack very much."

So... what do you think? Are you any more excited? Less excited? Personally, I think that's a way random title, but I remember thinking the new Harry Potter titles were random until I understood the meaning behind them. I think we can expect new adventures ahead, at least.

You beat me to it, PG. ;)

Wow...I know we've been hearing about this what seems like forever, but now it finally seems real! More CJS!! :greenbanana: :yay: :greenbanana:

I really, really hope they bring Barbossa back in this one. And I like the title...it fits with the previous movies, and hints at more strange ports o' call. Too bad we're going to have to wait until 2011, but at least we'll have the Hatter, Tonto and maybe Barnabas to tide us over in the meantime. ;)

It's interesting news. I can't say I'm terrible fond of the titles, I think the previous two movies had slightly better more piratey titles, and when I look at this one, I sort of feel like there is this implicature that they're going to be doing/going stranger things/places than in the previous films...and that's not what I'd want in the next pirates movie...but it's good to hear that they're at least moving ahead.

I do wonder though, if they have a script yet, before they did this subtitle, or if it's still a sort of working title.

On the plus side of a 2011 release...it gives lots of time to arrange Line Parties. ;)

Ha! I almost posted something about this until I saw this thread. Good thing I looked.

I'm not sure what I can make of the title, but I'm with Alia, I hope it doesn't get stranger than the last two. I was under the impression that they were going to try to go back to the feel of the original movie.

But in any case, I'm excited about it. :yay:

Edit: I found some footage of Jack Sparrow on stage at D23 Link

Glad I could help, Brookworm. :D

I found this article concerning the plot. It's not very spoilerish, more like speculation. But if you're overly worried about those things, you might use caution. Short version: The title comes from a 1987 pirate book of the same title that Disney purchased about 3 years ago from the author.

Man, I hope the speculation is wrong...

I suppose looking for the Fountain of Youth might prove interesting, especially if it is only pitched as the beginning goal which moves us onto another plot, but that having been said, I still have to state my dislike for including it. Having it tie into the last film in that manner feels a bit cheap (possibly because I didn't like that film, but I still think they ought to do something like with the first film, you have it, he's going back for more treasure, then wham, next film is a new plot idea). If they go with the Fountain of Youth, I fully expect that they should include Barbossa (who has turned out to be one of the few redeeming characters of the franchise for me, especially the latter portions), Ragetti and Pintel, Murtogg and Mullroy, etc.

I don't think they want to include some of those minor characters, since that's makes more of a scheduling nightmare, and also they could be using time to develop new characters, so I feel then that it ought to skip that completely. Plus...fans have done plenty enough good or bad treatments of that, too, and it is nice to leave some stuff up to the fans.

All that being said, I don't suppose there is anyone who has read this book, is there? I may see about finding it and reading it (if no one else has) and if that is the case, I'd be happy to post some up about it.

I don't mind the Fountain of Youth idea. As you pointed out, the adventure in looking for it would probably be more interesting than having him find it. In fact, I almost hope he doesn't for a reason I can't quite put my finger on. But it doesn't bother me that they tie this movie to the others. It would be sort of strange to go forward as if all those other adventures never happened. I didn't hate the third movie (I liked DMC the least), but what bothered me about both sequels was the over-the-top special effects and delving a little too much into the supernatural. It's fine to have a small amount of it, but the later plots used it so much, it made the whole story seem like an epic myth. It was harder to relate to the characters and the plot. That's what I hope they steer away from this time.

It seems like I heard somewhere that Geoffrey Rush was up for another one, so Barbossa might very well be there. I hope they also bring a lot of the other minor characters back too. *crosses fingers for Anamaria despite probable disappointment* Oh, and Gibbs! He has to be there too. I know Jack left him in Tortuga, but he can go back for him. :P

I've never read the book, but if you decide to, I would be interested in knowing what you think of it.
