Well everyone, one new perk of our shiny new board is we can create and join things called joinable groups. Joinable groups are basically like clubs or cabins dedicated to a particular subject. In general, we plan on making groups open for anyone to join, although it is possible to create special groups that are joinable by invitation only. This link should help explain this in case I've thoroughly confused you at this point. What we need from you is what groups people would be interested to joining. There is an incredibly large range of topics we could choose, from your favorite PotC character, fans of dogs, lovers of American Idol, etc; you name it, we could do it! Obviously, we don't want to have 500 different groups going on, so we would love your suggestions that we could then narrow down to a more manageable number. Try to think of things that you know other people would be interested, because it wouldn't much fun for you to be in a group all by yourself.  Go ahead and post your suggestions in this thread. Would anyone else be interested in a John Simm Appreciation Society? Or perhaps the Twilight fans might like a club for the books? To borrow from the Facebook group, a "I wish I wasn't a Muggle" group for Harry Potter fans? |

I think Monty Python is very doable, there are quite a few fans on here. Something like the preferred PotC movie might be better suited to a profile field..it all depends on what people want and prefer. To start, I'll create a joinable group for Monty Python fans (we'll go generic sice Flying Circus was awesome, too), and we'll see how many are interested in that, and if any issues start cropping up.

It works great! I was able join the group, and I was able to leave it too. Sorry I couldn't stay, guys. I'm just not that into Monty Python. |

As long as I know I got it working. I'll be adding a few more groups then. Edit: Okay, so I added groups for all three of the PotC movies, with more...different names. If anyone has a specific name for the Monty Python fans (perhaps something mentioned in one of their movies or shows), I'm all game for changing it to that, or having a vote for the name. I'd like to add a Disney group, (and will) but does anyone have a special name they want for the group? Anyone? PG? -- I'll just change the name once people kick out a suggestion or two. Just curious, is the group you've joined supposed to show up under your avatar somewhere, or does it just show in your profile? I just joined the CotBP group, but it only says so in my profile. Eek! And why can't I get that ugly "Edited by" thing off of my post? Edited by Monkey, Feb 24 2009, 03:47 AM.

The groups only show up in the profile. There is a cheap way to get around it, but it takes extra work on the members' parts. First, I'd create a custom profile field with one line text, and specify that to show up under the avatar. Members would have to fill that in themselves. I did a quick search to see if there is anyway to move it under there, but no joy. With how we allow multiple groups this is sort of bound to get messy under there anyway, but if enough people want it to show there, I'm fine with adding that in. I just don't want to add a feature that only two people will use, you know? (gar! *points at the floor above* It's midnight, put the dang basketball away now! Some of us are going to bed in a few minutes!)
Oh...um...because I disabled the ability for members to do that...do people want that back? The only reason I disabled that is because I was worried that if we ever get a troll again, they'd have the ability to edit their posts, and we'd never know that they did...  I can change it back though. Do people want that changed back? |

The edit thing's not a big deal, and that's a pretty good reason to disable it. I don't mind if you leave it. I'll just have to be more careful to get my posts right the first time. *shifty eyes* And same goes for the joinable groups. I was just expecting it to show there and was surprised when it didn't. Don't go to any trouble. |

Yes, a Disney group! The first name that popped into my head was "The Wonderful World of Disney" but... would it be ok to use that? We could always say something like "The Magical World of Walt Disney" or something similar if that would be a problem. I always like linking magic with Disney.

I don't know if it's a trademarked phrase, and if it would cause trouble...technically, anytime we use certain phrases or names on here, or when we use pictures, we are in violation, but the general way these things go is that this is a fan board/base, and that by gathering and discussing this stuff it actually helps the studio, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Disney, so they don't sue over that...usually. Short answer: I don't know. I was thinking that we might try and strive to name them slightly more closely to a "fan"-type name, but we can do some sort of poll if we have a few suggestions for names. |

Hmm, let's see... if we're wanting to go all alliterative like the PotC groups, we could do something like "Disney Devotees" (but we don't want to copy DMC's group) or "Disney Disciples" (but that sounds a bit weird). Or we could just say something random like "Disney Enthusiasts." Or we could just leave it at Disney Fans since that pretty much gets the point across.
