AKA ... The year with the summer that inherited a bunch of movies that were due out in 2008.

For me, despite my intense disapproval of studios moving movies from the fall/winter up to summer '09, I'm probably still going to see them.

The one movie I really have in mind to see this year is Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, even though I think it ranked as one of my least favorite in terms of the books. Hopefully this will be a chance for them to, dare I say it, improve upon it a bit? But I'm looking forward to that one. And will probably be geeky enough again that I'll go dressed up.

I'm still undecided about the Star Trek movie...I think I'll go if one of my parents or friends want to go (one of my "already a Trekkie" friends...I'm not sure I want this to be the first taste of Star Trek for some of my other friends).

What else has everyone excited and eager to go to the movie theater for? Or at least rent?

I'm not too sure about a lot of films, but I am looking forward to Transformers 2, and Wolverine, and G.I. Joe, just to be unoriginal, Watchmen looks cool from what I've seen of it so far, and Terminator 4, to give it a shorter and less silly title, also I did see some interesting looking trailers for Knowing and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, so I kind of want to see them too, just since it's good to see non-sequel or non-spin-off films sometimes.

That may be it for now, until I see some more trailers or hear about anything cool sounding, or maybe remember one I heard or saw about and totally forgot about.

My most anticpated films of next year are Wolverine, Terminator: Salvation, Watchmen, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Star Trek, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, 9 and Public Enemies.

Well, Wolverine and Terminator both just look like awesome summer sci-fi flicks, and as a huge fan of both series, I can't wait for either. More or less the same goes for Transformers, but I'm not nearly as invested in that.

I'm a bit (and by 'a bit' I mean 'massively') worried about Watchmen on a variety of levels; FOX now has distribution rights, it is quite a gigantic undertaking, I think it may be better left a comic when all is said and done, Rorschach sounds like a :censored: poorly mimicing Batmn's voice in The Dark Knight.... I hope its as awesome as it could be, but I'm losing faither every time something else is announced about it.

As a non-Trekkie, Star Trek looks amazing as a sci-fi film, and I hope it is at least 1/10th as cool as the theatrical trailer makes it look.

9 (links to the short film and new teaser trailer) is a CG-animated film directed by the dude who directed Wanted, and... well its hard to explain, just check out the trailer, or better yet, the short film, which is amazing.

Public Enemies (Wiki page), for those of you who don't know, is a crime drama/thriller-thing directed by Michael Mann, and starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis, an FBI agent trying to take him down. Even if it didn't sound extremely good, it has Depp and Bale. Just about anything short of gay porn starring them would get me there opening night.

Oh, and I too, Alia, am extremely angry about the moving of HP. Not only did it make us wait over 6 months MORE for the next film and mess up the entire release slate of last November, but they announced that right after the trailer came out and on the day that the summer '09 preview of Entertainment Weekly arrived at my house, with HP as the main attraction. FYWB!!!!!

Ah, also, Steven, I saw Benjamin Button last week; long story short, I thought it was excellent. You should enjoy it, I think.

I don't think Fox has to do anything at this point, since Warner already did all the advertising for it, putting money into the ad campaign, so Fox just sat back while it happened and came in like a vulture to pick at the remains when it was all done, the film must be finished as well, and Fox are trying to delay it now? they just suck, seriously, I hope they don't try to cut it down to a PG-13, that way they'll suck even more than their cancelling shows and bringing out loads of unneeded sequels.

Also, I'm still not sure about the changing of the ending, I didn't read up on that too much, maybe the finale will come as a surprise that way, but I do know some of what's been altered, and it just sounds weird. As for Batman's voice, that does seem to have been used in a lot of films, or at least films based on comics, I was watching Sin City again a few weeks back and everyone seemed to talk in the same gravelly growl, I think some of the Marvel movies have had the whole deep voice thing too, at least Fantastic Four and DareDevil, for Kingpin, I could try to go on, it just seems like the thing which happens, so it doesn't bother me that much, at the moment it doesn't anyway, maybe in a few films time when it's overused it may? :P

I don't mind the changed ending as much... then again, I've not actually SEEN it, obviously, so maybe that will change my opinion. I don't think its necessary, but I don't think its the sacrilege many are seeing it as.

As for the voice, I disagree there. Marv sounds like Mickey Rourke, he can't help that, nor can Benicio del Toro, and no one else in there sounds like that. Same goes for Kingpin, thats how Michael Clarke Duncan sounds. Batman in The Dark Knight and Rorschach, however, sound virtually identical to one another. I may be alone, but I think there's a pretty big difference between a naturally deep voice (or even a purposely deepened voice) and the raspy, gravelly, scratchy and deep voice shared by Rorschach and Batman.

Ahem... we do have a Dark Knight thread, I believe. Hint, hint. ;)

Well, I don't remember a lot of the movies that are coming out this year, so I'm sure the list will grow. Here's what I've got so far:

Confessions of a Shopaholic (Looks a little on the dumb side, but sometimes you need something like that to escape reality)
Bride Wars (I really like Anne Hathaway, and Van from "Reba" is in it!)
Paul Blart: Mall Cop (Okay, this one looks like it could be really dumb, but it also looks hilarious. Only time will tell.)
New In Town (That's iffy, though. I like Renee Zellweger, but why does Harry Connick, Jr. look like a mountain man?)
Night at the Museum 2 (This looks excellent. And Amy Adams is in it!)
Last Chance Harvey (Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson both rock.)
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Not my favorite of the books either, but I'm excited nonetheless.)
Angels and Demons (Although I could easily see this one becoming rated R)
Monsters vs. Aliens (Could be stupid, but any movie in which Stephen Colbert is the President of the United States has to be somewhat cool, right?)
Last Night (Keira Knightley! Woohoo!)
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (This sounds very intriguing, especially considering it's Heath Ledger's very last role ever ((although Dark Knight was his last completed role)). Plus, the guy turns into Johnny Depp and Jude Law! How awesome can you get? And Colin Farrell, but I'm just meh about him.)
Julie & Julia (Again: Amy Adams! Yay! Also, food! Yum!)
Inkheart (I read the book, but it's been awhile. Looks interesting.)
New Moon (That's really quick, I hope they don't screw it up. I'm a little irked about the director change. If they also change the actor for Jacob, then I might be a lot irked. Even if it is my future husband Ben Barnes.)

That's all I can think of right now, which is a lot more than I thought I would have. And now I'll stop procrastinating and go to bed.

Ahem... we do have a Dark Knight thread, I believe. Hint, hint. ;)

We're discussing Rorschach from Watchmen. :)

And did you mean Night at the Museum 2, not National Treasure 2? Becuase that came out in 2007. Assuming thats the case, I want to see that, too. I hope they don't go too much more over-the-top with it.

And I forgot about Angels & Demons, that looks pretty cool, and I enjoyed the first one. And if that could get away with PG-13, I don't think they'd rate this one R.

And as for New Moon, I liked Twilight (didn't read the books, though), and look forward to a sequel with a bigger budget, and hopefully a better editor and less crazy director. And I agree with wanting to change the actor for Jacob, I didn't like him much in the first film. (Though, again, didn't read the books, so... I don't know, he may have been dead-on. In the film though, I just didn't think he fit properly.)

Good call. All of this just goes to show that I shouldn't post things late at night while suffering from a cold. It messes up my brain. Yes, I meant Night at the Museum 2. I've already seen National Treasure!

And I'm actually hoping that they don't change the actor for Jacob. I didn't love him that much in the first movie, but he doesn't have a lot to do in the first book. If he can turn into hulking, muscular, New Moon Jacob, which he's been trying to do, then I think they should let him stay. But we'll see.

Can I also include movies that came out in 2008 but haven't seen yet, so I will be seeing them in 2009? Because I still really want to see Tale of Despereaux, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Australia. And probably Seven Pounds, since no one will tell me what happens since it will ruin the twist or whatever. And maybe Doubt, although it looks rather intense. I have to be in the right kind of mood to watch intense movies.

Late night-posting tends to end up that way, its alright. :)

The studio, I meant about Jacob; I agree with the studio. I'm aware of the fans' collective hatred of that decision, and can understand it, I guess, having felt that way about various casting decisions over the years.

I've seen Benjamin Button, Australia and Doubt and think they're all great. My favorite of the 3 is by far Australia; its 3 hours (which is a turn-off for many people, but keep in mind Button's that long, too) of pure escapist, romantic epic-ness, with Hugh Jackman. And Nicole Kidman. I just thought it was one of the most fun, enjoyable movies I've seen in a long time.

Button was excellent, as well, but I didn't really dig the ending. Again, though, the movie's nearly 3 hours long and I only kinda-sorta-diskliked maybe 20 minutes of it. And its not even dislike.. I don't know, it just takes time to process it, I guess.

Doubt is rather intense, but it takes a while to get there, and I thought that it was fairly poorly paced. Great, great acting, especially from Hoffman, but it would've been so much better if it were paced better and started off more quickly. Worth seeing for the performances, but you may be disappointed by the final product.

As for Seven Pounds, I haven't seen it but I've read nothing anywhere near approaching good about it, and it was rated one of Entertainment Weekly's 10 worst films of the year (on the grounds that nothing at all made any sense). Thats not to say they've got the final word on everything entertainment-related, but thats a pretty harsh blow. Too bad, though, I like Will Smith and Rosario Dawson, and The Pursuit of Happyness was really good. Definitely not going to see it in theatres, but I hope if and when I do see it, its not as bad as people say.

EDIT: Taylor Lautner still playing Jacob in New Moon Good news for you, PG!

Yup, I saw that! I'm glad he gets a chance to prove himself. Hopefully he'll do a great job.

I'm back because I remembered another movie I'm excited about. 17 Again. I've come to like Zac Efron, although I still refuse to join the HSM party, and I liked him a lot more in Hairspray than I did HSM. And of course, Matthew Perry is always funny. It looks like it could be good. I wish I had something more eloquent to say about it, but I'm drawing a blank.

Okay, I really hope I don't come up with anything else, because otherwise I'm going to have to spend the entire rest of this year going to the movies, and I don't have that kind of money!

Bah, you only listed about 20 films, thats only about 2 months' worth of moviegoing. :P

I'd forgotten two movies before, one of which I've been waiting for for years: Coraline and Fanboys.

Coraline (ComingSoon page) is a stop-motion pic from Henry Selick, director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, and I think it looks very fun.

Fanboys (Wiki page) is... well, you should know what this is. Its been delayed since 2006, and is a comedy telling the story of a group of friends who go to steal a copy of The Phantom Menace from Skywalker Ranch so that their dying friend can see it before he passes. Not only does this movie sound amazing anyway, but it looks hysterical even to the non-SW crowd as well (from what I gathered at a viewing of the trailer with Zack and Miri Make a Porno). Cannot wait for that one!

I think I'd like to Coraline too, it's kind of funny as I found out about that just after reading the graphic novel adaptation of the book, and when looking for information found there's a movie coming, which I probably should have seen coming since there's movie versions of everything, if I have a thought I should expect to see a movie made from it not long after, but I really liked the book, or the graphic novel version anyway, I think what I've seen of it does look a little too cartoony for what did get kind of dark at times, but I like stop-motion, and I like the story, so I'll try it. :P

I might read that book, then, Steven, sounds cool!

I just watched the trailer for I Love You, Man, and that looks really funny! Its got Jason Segel (from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which I've yet to see, and How I Met Your Mother, which though I've only seen a few eps of, I love) and Paul Rudd (most recently from Role Models, which, agian, I've yet to see). Its about Rudd's character not having anyone close enough to him for him to name best man at his wedding, and he goes on a series of 'man-dates' to find a best friend, and thus best man. Sounds odd, but just check out the trailer; ComingSoon page.

Though I don't really know anything about that movie and have only watched the trailer, does anyone find it weird that he doesn't just ask his brother to be his best man? Even if they're not particularly close, it seems like an easy choice. Maybe the movie will explain it. Like the wedding will be while his brother's on vacation in Europe or something. :P

It's been delayed so long I forget they were ever going to release it! I don't think though, that it will top my favorite fan film that was made (I forget the title but it was a lovely story about when they rereleased the original trilogy in theaters, and the projector goes out, and everyone comes together to act out the rest of the film. It was very sweet). I'm going to blame my forgetting about this film on the fact that I don't keep up with all the Star Wars news anymore.

My sister and I went on a trailer spree yesterday, looking through to see what was interesting and what wasn't, and most of what I went for (which she didn't) were a whole bunch of documentaries. There were a couple of other films that did look good (but I can't recall the names) so perhaps this year won't be almost entirely movie-less.
