But what else is new, right? Let's have a good cry about the movies coming soon to a theatre near you: Ace Ventura Jr. Yes. That's right. Movieworld brings us a movie starring a kid who will no doubt overact much like his dad. And Jim Carrey is nowhere in sight. I don't think they learned anything from Dumb and Dumberer or Son of the Mask. Robocop A remake. Why? WHY? Who knows. Maybe they want to make him shinier or something pointless like that. The Sims: The Movie Wow, what a title. It just rolls off the tongue. As a Sims fan, I'm not looking forward. At all. Want a little sample of what it's about? (From an interview with producer John Davis, found here.) "Because most games arent movies, so this is the way I did it: The Sims, as you know, you can control your imaginary world, right? And our movie, a young man, a 16 year old kid of a 14 year old kid and his friend get their hands on this thing called the Sims Infinity Pack, right," ... Let me just pause right there and ask... 16 year old kid of a 14 year old kid? Either the producer doesn't realise that the "father" in this scenario would have been born when his child was two years old, or the interviewer had a bit of fun at John's expense. Well, it could also have been a slip of tongue, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. ... "which kind of this very strange video game store which was there just for that moment, and seemingly wasnt all that. But what they realize is that they can scan their world in, because this is the most life like, real Sims game ever. And as they are playing this they are all of a sudden realizing is what they are playing on the game is having an effect on the real world. So in effect, through the game, they are able to control their world. Its wish fulfillment, and obviously it turns against them." Of course, obviously! Am I the only one thinking they've lost the plot? By the sound of this "plot", I think they really did. Monopoly That's just horrible. Nothing more to say. Nightmare on Elm Street Apparently the mantra of a movie-maker is "When in doubt, remake." Who knows, maybe Johnny Depp will be in this remake too. I'll not delve into this subject too much, so I'll end this post with something which I am horrified about. Dragonball As a huge fan of Dragonball, I will say that I am definitely boycotting this movie. True, I am a fan of Stephen Chow and Chow Yun-Fat, but I am horrified at how they are messing up an awesome story. And an awesome character. Well, all the awesome characters. Just looking at a picture of Picollo is enough to make one weep. Maybe the people working on the movie can't tell the difference between green and whatever kind of colour they chose instead. Do an IMDb search for movie remakes that's being made and see if there's something to upset you. I know of someone who did just that and he should post here about it.

Unfortunately most pages I find at IMDb happily say the information can't be given, but we do have a lot to look forward to... The Smurfs Westworld Short Circuit Logan's Run Magnum P.I The A-Team Kiki's Delivery Service Escape From New York And Attack of the Killer Tomatoes At least there's Voltron and Thundercats to look forward to, because we can't have an 80's themed party without those. I'll go back to seeing what other horrors I can find there, and I only mentioned a small few of them, since most don't have pages, I wonder how many will never get made? I can only hope all of them... apart from Thundercats and Voltron anyway. Also, The Sims seems to rely on Terminator logic, so I guess that's joining the 80's party too.

Yeah, well not only that, think of all the sequels coming out soon: PotC 4 Shrek Goes Fourth Ice Age 3 Transformers 2 Transporter 3 Fast and Furious (third sequel of "The Fast and the Furious." Clever title, no?) Terminator Salvation Toy Story 3 Cars 2 Iron Man 2 Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel Butterfly Effect: Revelation I'm sure the list goes one, but I'm tired of looking. Anytime any movie is remotely successful, they make a sequel, which sometimes ruins the first one. On a brighter note, there's apparently going to be a Fraggle Rock movie, which could be cool, albeit not original. EDIT: Check this out. Apparently not only is there going to be a Monopoly movie (that made me laugh really hard, btw), there's also going to be a Ouija Board movie and a Battleship movie. Why?! |

That's what I thought when I found the page for it, I saw that film around Christmas time last year, why would anyone take a cartoon and make it live-actiony? it makes no sense, but then there is definitely going to be a live-action Akira movie, so maybe sense got thrown away a while back. Getting back to sequels, Transformers 2 should be pretty awesometacular I think, but there are too many sequels now. Beverly Hills Cop 4 Pink Panther 2 High School Musical 4 I just started searching the sequels at IMDb, Cats and Dogs 2? only morbid curiousity will keep me going through this list.

I completely agree, Cat. They just love to mess with one's childhood. <_<
Oh wow, the insanity goes way deeper than I thought. Edit: Ah, I forgot to comment on some sequels... or whatever the fourth, fifth or 100th of a movie is called. Transporter 3 is something I look forward to, the second one was wonderful. And Transformers would be cool. Toy Story 3... whee!
I'll refrain from talking about the rest, though.

Transporter 3 looks cool too, even though the trailers told me the entire film, why do trailers do that?
National Treasure 3 Night at the Museum 2 Rambo V And S. Darko? the sequel to Donnie Darko? say waaah? And a fourth Scream film? ok, I think I'm done, Rambo might be ok, but I'm starting to lose the will to live reading some of these, Lethal Weapon 5? argh!

What? They're seriously going to try to make a sequel? *throws up hands* If this is what we get after a writers strike... Seriously...some of those things mentioned as sequels, or as remakes are truly unforgivable. The truly sad part, is that many of these if they aren't big money makers...will probably make just enough money for producers and studio execs to decide that more sequels are in order. Have I mentioned how much I'm loving TV? |

TV rocks. ![]() It's true that some of those sequels will probably be awesome. I just get sick of the fact that the studios don't bother to think up as many new concepts as they used to. I understand the first one made lots of money, and I'll probably really like the second one (or third, or fourth...) and it's awesomeness, but can we please see something new?! I will say that I do appreciate Pixar as far as that goes. Yes, we've got some sequels on the schedule (Toy Story 3 should be awesome! TS2 was the only "Disney" animated sequel that wasn't lame), but we also get a lot of new stuff as well. Like WALL-E. Totally original idea there. Steven, at the risk of sounding stupid, is there a section listing all the sequels, or are you just looking at upcoming releases like I was? Because that was taking forever. |

I used the power search function at IMDb, changing the date of search to 2008-2015, excluding TV stuff and using keywords like "remake" or "sequel", I even searched for "comic" to see what comic book movies they're coming up with, and some were just dumb.
 I don't mind sequels, some sequels can be good, the best film this year was probably Dark Knight, just to prove that sequels aren't always a bad idea, but remakes, I can never really understand the logic there, sometimes a film comes along with a good story idea and totally messes it up, why can't they be remade? it does happen, like when The Island remade the Clonus Horror, I don't see why people take good films and remake them instead of taking bad films and making them good, and why not make a sequel instead of a remake? if people can accept a sequel to Superman without any of the original actors, then why not expand on something instead of starting it all again? I'm thinking if they made a sequel to Robocop, based on the original scripts for the sequels, and not the ones we got given which sucked, I'd buy that for a dollar, random quotage there, I'll stop it, but a remake? why? it just doesn't need improving on, meh, I'll stop now, Hollywood just doesn't make sense at times. Something else, but most of the really bad films I've seen lately, which seems like a lot of bad films, with the exception of Quantum of Solace, weren't sequels, I think people need to concentrate on making original films better too, to avoid us getting even more sequels.

Spielberg and Will Smith to remake Oldboy Oh, please God, no! This sounds like the worst idea in the history of remakes. Everything about that is wrong; anyone that knows what happens in Oldboy can't possibly think that this would be a good idea. The wonderful thing about Korean movies (particularly the films of Park Chan-Wook) is that they manage to bring humour to some very dark films. This is something very alien in the west. I doubt they will keep the ending, I'd be amazed if they kept a lot of the things that made this film so brilliant and I can't think of a less likely pair to remake it than Spielberg and Smith. |

Oh... my... word!
That's just awful, I did see the original, and I can't see how they could remake that and keep pretty much anything which happened in it, to say why would be to leave major spoilers, but Spielberg and Smith? they both make family friendly stuff, that'd be like remaking... say... Kill Bill, and having it be a Disney film about someone trying to get their own back at someone who ruined their party, causing hilarious yet vengeful acts such as launching pies at people, maybe it won't be quite that bad, but with some of the subject matter involved I can't see it being much better, ridiculous.

Apparently Will Smith's son (his name escapes me at the present) is going to star in the remake of The Karate Kid... There does seem to be so many more remakes these days, why?! It can't be that they've just run out of ideas.... Laziness is attacking Hollywood hard on. What was the point in the writers strike and all that if all they are doing is re-writing and adapting someone else's work? I don't mind sequels if there's a genuine story/need for it. Making sequels for the sake of making more $$ is not cool. Series, al la Harry Potter and the Narnia movies, are a much better route! They should look at making more books into movies! Granted they don't always work, but at least it's not something we've already seen! In short, someone needs to tell Hollywood... if it ain't broke, don't fix it On the Fast & Furious movie, it's supposed to be set in between 2 Fast 2 Furious and Tokyo Drift... |

I think a lot of it is that because of the amount of money they spend on making movies, studios like to make films that are pretty sure of success. If it worked before it'll work again and rather than just re-release a classic (which many people wouldn't bother going to see) they'd rather remake it with current stars with a big box office pull. The same goes for remakes of foreign films which tend to get poor distribution here and a lot of people are put off because of subtitles. If you remake it with Leonardo DiCaprio and Sienna Miller and that effeminate child from High School Musical it's far more likely to bring in the bucks. |

Will Smith's son is way young and short, I guess they're focusing on the Kid part of the Karate Kid, rather than having someone who could make a pretty exciting fight scene, but that film was already remade recently, and it was called Never Back Down, which actually did have some good fights in it, even if it was mostly pretty cheesy.
I think there already are a lot of adaptations of books, it just seems that almost all of these are based on fantasy books for kids, which are book one of ten or something, because every movie needs to be a series before it's even got one film out. |
