Hello, Null! :D

I'm not sure which direction a sequel can go in, since the last ones were so out there with crazyness that to try and top that would be to take things too far, and after the whole giant crab lady thing then it's not good to make things even sillier, maybe there is a chance another film could be good, as long as it leaves out the supernatural stuff, I know that was a big part of the first one, and the sequels, but how many times can a pirate face off against the undead and various monsters? there are normal pirates, the kind which are just evil because they want to be, not because of some crazy curse put upon them, if they mix things up a bit and have it be non-cursed pirates then maybe it'd work, since that wouldn't lead to the far fetchedness of the last two, and there must be more non-cursed pirates than cursed ones, so they have to bump into them sometime, just an idea anyway.

 Yeah, the ratio of non-undead to undead pirates is probably pretty high in favor of the non-undead ones, so it does follow to assume they'd cross paths sometime or another. That is an interesting idea... I could see them going for that more grounded approach since every executive and thier brother thinks that you have to do that to get an audience and that Chris Nolan is the only director in the world worth talking about, but on the other hand I can see Disney thinking that it ought to be in fact MORE over the top to draw in little kids for even more piles of money.

I'm hoping they strike a blance between the two like they did in the first film, because I honestly don't think that too far down either end of the spectrum could lead to anywhere that isn't bad.

So far the only other pirates we've seen have been incompetent, it's almost as if the only way to be a good pirate, other than being a main character, is to have supernatural powers, the first movie had everything, and kept that stuff kind of to a minimum, it didn't get in the way of having the characters pull out swords and fight, the last two films had like... two real fight scenes? and that's between the two of them, I'd like to see them bring out some people with real fighting skills, instead of just CGI things which can't do much at all other than get finished in amusing ways, even a big muscle guy throwing everyone around would be more fun than non-real things which just fall over when the effects people grow tired, we've seen supernatural stuff, and plenty of it, now I think it's about time we get a pirate movie, or at least get more over the top fight scenes like in the first one, more sword fights or maybe add some martial arts, anything would be good, as whatever they make has to get back to that fun of the original again. :P

 And I thought that I was good at ranting and rambling. :P

I agree, it would be nice to see some good 'ole-fashioned swashbuckling again without fish-people, however cool-looking some of us (myself included) thought the fish-people were. I'd like to see Jack and Barbossa duel without invulnerability, that would be pretty freakin' sweet.

I was watching Indiana Jones again, and thought that since PotC ripped it off so much already, they could at least get back to putting in crazy fight scenes, maybe a punch up would be cool, and not the DMC style one which doesn't really count as action, but one with loads of action, the films are supposed to be for the family as well, and it'd be a bit much to expect kids to sit through another three hours of supernatural drama without a lot of fun stuff to keep the younger ones happy. :P

Ooh, I'm replying to a thread! This is exciting!!! :P

Anyway, so, yes, Pirates 4. Well, to be honest, I think it probably won't be a good movie. :P I mean, they could always surprise me and do something magnificent, but I doubt it. I don't mind Will and Elizabeth not being there. I wasn't ever a huge fan of either character. I hope that a lot of the characters such as Gibbs and Marty will still be there, because that'd make it feel more connected to the first three, instead of just a random new adventure of Jack Sparrow.

Of course, I hope that all the rumors of flying ships are not real (although, I must admit, for some reason the fountain of youth idea doesn't bother me so much. Maybe Johnny Depp really is Jack Sparrow, survived after all these years. It would explain why the guy just seems to get better and better looking as he gets older). But I do hope they are a bit more realistic. I'm not talking like the recent Bond films, that have shunned all that made Bond awesome by getting rid of the gadgets and craziness, but like someone said, a happy medium, as in the first movie, where, though there was a curse, I never really thought of it as a movie about curses, but as a movie about pirates. If there were more "alive" badguys and fewer supernatural/dead ones I would be happy as well. But, magic obviously exists in the PotC world, and I don't expect it to disappear from the 4th movie.

I just hope they stick to the Caribbean this time. Asia, though cool, seems a strange setting for a movie called Pirates of the Caribbean.

And, personally, I hope it is not a prequel. I've just never been a fan of them, I guess because you know where they're going. Like, in Star Wars, it really wasn't all that shocking when Anakin turned into Vader. Besides, prequels seem to need to make really big stretches to get characters together, like getting C-3PO in the prequels. That was so stupid. I have a C-3PO toy from before the prequels, an official toy, that says right on the box that he's 100 years old and has never had a memory wipe. Dang prequels, obliterating canon. <_<

But, to sum up this long rant, whether the movie is good or not, I'll definitely go and see it, and, in spite of myself, I'll probably like it. What can I say? I've loved pirates since way before PotC came out, and I'll continue to love them for my entire life. I even enjoy bad pirate movies. Well, Cutthroat Island was pushing it. :P But anyway, yes, I can recognize when a movie is bad but I like it anyway, and I get the sneaking suspicion that PotC 4 will probably be in that list of movies.

I'm not even sure about the Fountain of Youth idea, I know adventure movies usually revolve around some item everyone is chasing after, but this isn't really an item, it's a place, a solid thing which can't be moved, so everyone goes on a journey to get there first and... well, that's it, they can't really fight over who keeps it and end up having it lost and passed around for the duration, maybe they just argue about the order they drink in? or maybe Barbossa gets there first, takes a leak in it and no one else wants to do the drinking thing? it's just as McGuffins go it doesn't seem to lend itself too well to that little thing called dramatic tension, they'd get to the Fountain and they'd all be able to drink from it, and they'd live happily ever after, plus the Fountain of Youth already appeared in Mummy 3, so I'd hope maybe Pirates 4 would come up with something more original. :P

ROFLMAO!

*recovers* *wipes tears*

I don't mind the Fountain of Youth idea, especially since AWE sort of suggests it. It might not make a good McGuffin, but it might be a fun adventure trying to get to it. But then, it will probably be heavy on the supernatural/mythological characters again.

They could go with the supernatural monster seeking the Fountain to get their power back and live forever, but that was what Mummy 3 did, and in that one the supernatural monster turned into a three-headed dragon, so I think by now any idea Pirates 4 has involving the Fountain pretty much sucks in comparison to that. :P

Hi, Calm, and everyone else... Good to be back!

I, for one, would really like to see Anamaria make an appearance -- that would be the ultimate slap in the face for Jack (literally).

If the writing's done well and there isn't too much push to overdo the animations, it could still work. Much will also depend on which main characters appear and how much they're featured.

The movie industry is having some troubles in these times, so falling back on popular themes will be made use of until they can afford to experiment more. It's a shame, really, as the format of most adventure films has become so predictable.

Action adventure films are awesome, but there doesn't seem to be so many of them now, there's action, but not a lot of adventuring, the last two I saw would be Indy 4 and National Treasure 2, both of them were pretty much just video games, still fun, but the characters would skip from level to level without much linking the game stages together, I'm wondering if Pirates 4 will carry on with this, maybe one day we'll get the option to skip the cut-scenes so we get to the action levels faster? I'm not sure, I guess we'll find out when Jack reaches the first save point.

Anyone know how far this has come along in term of signing the top stars?
Without enough buy-in, it's going to be hard to be convincing. Seems that everyone's busy with other projects, so timing may be rough to bring all the cast together.

They'll probably get the go-ahead, and proceed as long as they get Johnny Depp. In terms of casting anyone else, they don't really have to go for really big stars, because they've got him, and brand power, so I don't think scheduling will be much of an issue unless it comes to scheduling of some of the crew members, perhaps (getting some of them to come back and their schedules to fit).

At this point, it's just too early for anything regarding regular and consistent updates. Once we get past the signing though, and start setting schedules, it should hopefully get better.

I was just wondering when we might be seeing a Pirates 4, IMDb has it as 2012, I know that's not always a reliable source, but that date is a long way away, so they have time to come up with something good, but also by the time it comes out I wonder if anyone will really still care to see another one, that date is nine years since the original, although it's still enough time to forget the sequels, hmm, we'll just have to see. :D

I wonder if anything will happen for a tenth anniversary, since it is Disney and they like to milk everything dry, since I realised how old the film will be when the next one is out. :P

Well, plenty of people went out to see the newest Indiana Jones, and the first one came out when my parents were in college (way more than nine years, I could look it up, but I'm in a bit of a rush). So...I don't think that will be much of an issue, plus, HBO seems to be repeating it frequently enough, and it get reruns on other channels over here in the US, and some of the phrases have entered pop culture, so I think there will always be some interest, even if it is more curiosity.

If we assume the 2012 release date is accurate, 2013, for their 10th anniversary will be the perfect opportunity for them to release the 4th movie on DVD, as well as rerelease the first three in a special box set, or the super duper quadruple movie one time special edition release set with Jack Sparrow bobble head. Or something like that. ;)
