Davy's Heart; Not sure what to think here....

Ok I have checked through the AWE section and havent found the answer to this question...

Why does the captain of the Dutchmen have to have his heart cut out, and when did this tradition start?

We are left to assume from the exchange between Will and Davy in Becketts "ready room" that Davy cut his heart out AFTER he came back from his first 10 year run. This is further substantiated from DMC when Tia/Calypso tells Davy's story: "It caused him so much pain that he cut out 'im heart and placed it in a chest" (paraphrased). If this is the case, then when Davy first took the position as Captain of the Dutchmen he still had his heart. So, why then is it that Will's heart HAS to be removed? When Bootstrap comes to cut out Will's heart, he says something along the lines of "the dutchmen has to have a Captain and the Captain's heart has to be cut out" (not the exact lines i know, but that is the gist of it). Also earlier in the movie when Jack and Will are talking about who will be Captain (before Jack "blows" Will overboard) Will asks Jack if he could cut out his own heart. So with all this, it seems it is a pre-requsite to have your heart removed (to me anyway).

Also, along this thought line raises the question: Was Davy the first to be charged with this duty?

Thoughts anyone?

I'm not too sure, but you'd expect someone would be cursed at the time, since obviously only an immortal person could manage the task of cutting out their own heart, think how far anyone would get without being cursed first, a few valves hacked through and they'd drop dead from blood loss, graphic I know, but it's why Davy would have to be cursed first, everyone else... there's not a whole lot of reason really, unless of course their heart caused discomfort, but what's the chances of that?

Yeah, this is an issue that I know I've seen discussed before. It really doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense, does it? Obviously, Davy did his duty for the ten years (and probably was still a 'man'--not tentacly). He of course would have been immortal/supernatural, in order to be able to sail between the worlds of living and dead, and go underwater and all that. But it wasn't until he found Calypso gone that he cut out his heart. We really don't know how long ago that was either. It must have been a long time though (centuries?), as he and the crew and the Dutchman are so changed. The only explanation for one having to cut their heart out that I can think of (since it evidently wasn't in the original 'contract', as it were) is that somehow by virtue of the fact that Davy did it and was Captain for so many years, that it somehow changed the rules.

It seems kind of a weak explanation, but there wasn't really anything in the movie that explained this bit. And knowing T&T, they only 'create' as much as they need for the particular story they are telling. I wonder if they ever addressed this question on their site? I haven't been there recently, and I don't remember seeing anything on it before. Might be worth a look. :)

I had wondered this, as well. It makes no sense to me. I guess the "weak explanation" of the rules changing after Davy is probably the best we have to go on.

Or maybe it has something to do with the chest. Since Davy had pierced Will's heart and he was now dead, the only way to get it restarted and bring him back to life - in order to be the Dutchman's captain - was to cut it out and put it in the ... Erm... Magical chest?

I know, I know, that's weak, too.
