Goku and Piccolo Cast!

I use to watch this show when I was little, and I liked it well enough, but JAMES MARSTERS was just cast as Piccolo; now I'm SERIOUSLY anticipating this movie, he's one of my favorite actors, holy crap, I really wanna see this movie now!!!

I'm still waiting for the ELAM. Evangelion would be a MUCH better movie then Dragonball Z.

I never got Dragonball Z. I don't see it being a success. It doesn't sound like a show that will transfer well to the big screen.

They should at least wait till Speed Racer comes out. That's the first big anime adaptation, and it'll probablh be a bigger success due to the people behind the production.

Plus, I don't see what this show has to offer. Speed Racer is being made by the Wachowski brothers. ELAM will be a Lord of the Rings-size CG showcase (Since WETA is involved, hope Jackson directs...) I don't see what this one really has to attract people outside of it's anime fanbase, which in America is not that big...

Um... no. Anime is becoming huge here. As someone who strongly dislikes anime in general, I can tell you that it is becoming disgustingly popular with middle school aged children in particular, and is working its way up through high school now, too.

DBZ was huge here about 6 years ago (I'm not sure if thats when it came out or what, but even I watched it then, and liked it well enough). I mean every guy in my school watched it religiously. It was just bad-ass for a while. There are also a dcenet amount of people in my high school now who seem interested in the prospect of a live-action adaptation.

As for those other animes you were talking about, I have no idea about Evangelion at all, so I can't comment, but I despise Speed Racer... far too corny for me, I'm sorry. I can't see that being a big success here.

Not really. It isn't huge. It's big, there is certainly a large fanbase, but it's small compared to other kinds of media, like comic books or video games (The latter is another point. Video games have large fanbases, and even then half of them bomb... Like hitman is going to). There si enough to get a resonable box office for the movie, if all the fans see it, but it won't be a blockbuster unless there is something to draw in others. A random movie goer would much rather want to see, say, Iron Man then Dragonball Z.

I'm not too sure what is going on with the Evangelion movie. It was announced a few years ago, but other then that there has only been a couple of illustrations from WETA. If it does get around to being made, though, it's going to be sweet....

This seems to be the trend now, every 80's cartoon is getting big screen treatment, Transformers was first, and Turtles got a comeback before I forget, but we have left to look forward to G.I Joe, Thundercats, Robotech, Voltron, and now Dragonball Z, it does sound like Dragonball Z, since the plain old original Z-less series was a little Goku, and this is a more grown version, yeah, but I'm really not sure what to think to this, I got hooked on DBZ a while back and seeing about the film doesn't fill me with hope as the first piece of news did have a load of character descriptions which sounded way different to what I knew, and I don't think it'd be that hard to make a faithful version, oh well, at least the fight scenes should be good, if the director could make a believable fight between two Jet Lis then a guy with huge spiky hair and dressed in orange, and a big green guy in robes, both flying at each other and fighting in the air should be easy in comparison.

Also, this isn't really the first live-action anime adaptation, there was a smaller budget Dragonball movie once, I saw it, and it was pretty weird to the extreme, plus as well there have been adaptations of other stories, based on the cartoons and the books and all, but all have been based on more violent ones, so this and Speed Racer would be the first big budget ones for the whole family, just to put you right there. :D

Since we had the Speed Racer talk, I'll post this in here, the first trailer, and... wow, it's like a cartoon, only real, and somehow it looks good too: Watch it!

Now, who actually agrees with me that it looks cool? I'm wondering if I'm alone on this.

I think that Speed Racer is one of the worst... anything ever made. That just confirmed my prior opinion. Its live action, but the racing scenes looked like Disney/Pixar's Cars. :blech: Thank you, NO.

Dragonball Z has extended its cast now, not by much though: Link, but any news is good news I guess, depending if having a live-action version is a good idea of course, and at the moment I'm thinking not, although I'll still see it, if I could watch Spider-Man get butchered in that turd of a third one I should at least be able to sit through this as well.

Stephen Chow is producing?

If this movie is anything like Kung Fu Hustle, I think I'm going.

I am going to boycott this movie, it's not going to appeal to me as a fan. I mean... Picollo is freakin not green! And no Krillin? I'd rant about this some other time, but right now I'm too tired.

Everything I've seen so far about it has sucked, and the worst thing is Piccolo, is it so hard to make a bad guy look like they're supposed to? it's even weirder when it deals with material which isn't exactly grounded in reality, so what would it change to make him look green? I think I was the same when I saw what they did to the Green Goblin in Spider-Man, when they made him look like a Power Ranger villain, so maybe there's some hope, a slight one, as for Krillin, maybe they took him out of it because kids don't tend to have bald heads? I know Charlie Brown did, but he was kind of a depressive so maybe that explains it, where Krillin's supposed to be cool, oh well, it still looks super cheesily awful, I'm not sure if a longer trailer will change how I think about that, but so far I'm not excited.

Changing Picollo's colour is horrible, he's greeeeen. That's the whole point of being Picollo. He's an alien, for goodness sake.

As for Krillin, he's into Shaolin... stuff, I think, which is why he's got a shaved head and them dots too. Getting rid of him for the sake of hairlessness is... baldism. Or something. <_< And adding new people? Wow, is that supposed to make up for it?

He is an alien, and a cool green alien, I just remember being a bit weirded out by other character changes at times with all these adaptations, like when they added that flame design to Optimus Prime, or made Galactus a big swirly cloud, ok, that one was kind of stupid, and I'm not saying it makes it ok, since obviously Piccolo should be green, it'd make it easier to tell which is which when they're fighting for one thing, and since they are also threatening to unleash the Goku monkey form then Piccolo's colour shouldn't be a problem at all, it sure wouldn't be the silliest thing happening, and doesn't Goku need a tail to turn into a monkey? are they really going to give him a tail? or will they explain it some other way?

It's also anti-old people, since Chow Yun Fat doesn't look anywhere near old enough to be Roshi, it's not good to add new characters to make up for the lack of ones from the story it's based on, but at least they don't mess up Krillin by having him be a long haired kid or something, so out of all the mess, there's something right I guess, even if it's being saved from seeing a character messed up.

I have feeling I'm going to be dragged to this movie, "just to see how bad it is," as my boyfriend gleefully squealed at me when we saw the trailer. He was downright giddy.

I am not a fan of this particular genre, let alone Dragonball itself... Anything I should know before being dragged in?

He was giddy? He's a fan, right? :D

Well, I loves ze DBZ so I can try and help with info. Steven says the origin of Goku is pretty much like the origin story of Superman. With the last alien from a planet that got blown up and being all superpowered on Earth. Umm... I hope that's not a spoiler for the movie.

We're not sure how close to the series this movie will stick. Heck, having Chow Yun Fat as Roshi is one of the dumbest things. Roshi is a sleazy perverted old man which I can't see Chow Yun Fat being able to do.

Okay, my problem with this movie is some major characters being taken out (Krillin) and adding new ones (some random people I don't know, obviously)
But that shouldn't bother right now, I want to say a bit of the character Goku (who hopefully won't be changed too much)
He's quite happy-go-lucky and loves to eat and, being a super alien, has the maddest fighting skillz on Earth. The bad guy is Piccolo, he's (hopefully going to be) green and also an alien and umm... somehow was an old guy who spat him out at some point. I think. I don't know his backstory too well. Anyways, with them being all superpowerful and such, they get to blast energybolts and fly. Like in the Matrix. And Superman, come to think of it. :D

There's not much I can say to prepare you for the movie-version of the DB universe, though, cause I don't know a lot about this movie. All I know is that I hope it'd be like Kung Fu Hustle or Shaolin Soccer. And if this ain't your cup of tea, Stormy, I understand. I do love this kind of movie, though. :D

Steven and I do want to see it now, only because it might be something to rip apart afterwards, so, just like your boyfriend, Stormy. :D It may just surprise us and be good, but I'm not holding my breath. Steven wants it to be good but expects it to be something like The Spirit. Which is funny. :D
