Since Sweeney Todd is only a few months away now, I figured we should give it a thread of its own! And to begin, here's the first official trailer!

Hm.
The theatrical version of it was really sort of a dark comedy. This version may have some comedic elements too. The trailers tend to only show one facet of a movie at a time. But this version seems darker. I can't wait to see it, though. :)

As an aside, it seems like I can't watch Johnny act anymore without seeing elements of Jack. It's almost annoying, because the whole time I'm watching him, I'm thinking There's Jack.

I know...I think Jack will always be there, now. And I think Jack was always there to an extent, before.

But I don't think that's a bad thing, really. :D

I think Jack was just Johnny, finally allowed free rein. And that freedom makes Jack/Johnny so appealing...don't we all wish we could let our inner selves loose like that? So yeah, Jack will always be there, and I for one don't mind at all. :)

I do want to see more singing bits from this. We've heard so much about it, and just been given the barest bones....and I must say, Rickman and Cohen both look like they are gonna be great! :D

SYNOPSIS::
Set in Dickensian London, it tells the tale of Benjamin Barker, a naive barber who is transported for life to Botany Bay on a trumped-up charge. After 15 years of torture, he escapes with the aid of a youthful sailor named Anthony Hope, and returns to London only to find his wife dead, and his daughter Johanna the ward of Judge Turpin, the man who sent Barker to Botany Bay in order to have his way with his wife 15 years prior.

He changes his name to Sweeney Todd and reopens his barbershop above the bakery of Mrs. Lovett, a loony woman who makes the (self-avowed) "worst pies in London." With Mrs. Lovett's help, Todd vows to avenge his wife's death by killing the Judge.

Meanwhile, Judge Turpin, in a fit of jealousy, has resolved to marry Johanna. However, she and Anthony secretly fall in love and make plans to elope. Anthony confides in Todd about his scheme to carry away Johanna to the other end of England, unaware of the fact that Johanna is Todd's daughter.

Having seduced the Judge into his barbershop, Todd is a razorstroke away from vengeance when Anthony bursts in, praising his love for Johanna. The Judge, incensed at both Anthony and Sweeney, vows to never return to the barbershop, and to hide Johanna away where neither may ever find her.

Broken and furious over his missed opportunity, Todd vows vengeance against all mankind until he can finally kill the Judge. As he begins to slit the throats of unsuspecting customers, Mrs. Lovett comes up with the ingenious idea of disposing of the bodies by baking them into pies. As Mrs. Lovett's business blossoms (with the help of her mentally dull assistant, Tobias), her romantic fixations on Todd grow, but Todd remains resolutely focused revenge.

Uhm ya Spoilers the rest of it so i dinnae put it up but yea...

First things first...He sings...Hmm...I don't really know what to think of that. Other then...I want to see him sing more! I seriously wanted to LMAO however, it's rather inappropriate at 2.12am in my parents house. Perhaps I could laugh to my hearts' content when I awake again later on. *giggles insanely*

As for the "seeing Jack everywhere in Depp's films", it's so true T_T; I started watching his earlier films such as 'The Astronauts' Wife', and 'Sleepy Hollow' and notice some similarities. Especially in 'Sleepy Hollow' when he says: "That's interesting, that's very interesting." It is disappointing in a way, that he is recycling lines. Despite this, it is a substantially strong calling card for Depp, comparitive to Charlie Sheen having the character name Charlie for all his film/tv roles.

Lastly, I think I'm going to dye my hair like Sweeney Todd XD

I am sooooo psyched for this movie. (Hence the new sig and avvy!)

I CANNOT WAIT to see it. I LOVE Tim Burton movies, and this one looks incredibly awesome on every level; the look of it, all the colors and lack thereof, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter together, freakin' Sacha Baron Cohen is in it!!! What's not to love!?!?!

I'm not the only one with a Sweeney set anymore. Yay!

Thoughts on the trailer:

Exactly how I envisioned it; delightfully macrabe, eccentric, and undeniably Burton. Yet it retained Sondheim's score and vision. What I liked best is that it did not overplay the musical card. With snippets of the orchestrations in the back (I heard "A Little Priest" in there), and a brief performance of "Epiphany", it was just enough to capture the attention of the viewer.

The costumes especially caught my eye (Pirelli looks stunning in bright blue, and Nellie Lovett looks divine in her morbid garb). The contrasts between "fantasy" and "flashback" scenes as oppose to the harsh almost Brechtian London environment are simply breathtaking.

Not too sure if I fancy Depp's accent yet, but I think it will grow on me.

In hindsight after watching the trailer again, doesn't the music sound like the PotC AWE trailer? I swear it's even the same notes. I was thinking perhaps it was the fan-made trailer, but this doesn't seem so. Any feedback to this? I realise my unhealthy obsession with PotC could have a profound effect on my hearing. As a consequence of being subjected to the trilogy, I now have selective hearing for the words 'Pirate', 'Jack', 'Caribbean', and 'Sparrow'. Conselling, anyone? ^__^;

Another selling point of Sweeny Todd film is the fact that the vetaran actor Alan Rickman has a great character in it =D I love his voice. Especially in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and also in Die Hard.

Someone else I know commented that the music was the same as the AWE trailer. I'd have to go back and listen to it again the be sure...but you are definitely not the only one who made that connection. :) I think a lot of times on movie trailers they reuse stuff--like there's some library of generic trailer music they can 'borrow' from. The trailers many times don't use music from the actual movie...not sure if it's because they haven't quite worked it all out or if they don't want to give too much away, or what. It is interesting when one notices certain theme music over and over again though. :)

I loved the bit with the ship coming out of the fog. Very piratey! :D

That is in fact the same song used in the AWE trailer; you're not crazy, and believe me: if you think thats obsessive, you clearly have not met me. :P Its a non-choral version of the song "Return of the King", and is by the group X-Ray Dog. There are many 'groups' (for lack of a better term) that compose music exclusively for film trailers; the three biggest ones are X-Ray Dog, Immediate Music and Pfiefer Broz. music.

In fact, we have a thread (albeit closed) specifically about the trailer music in the AWE trailer, as well as well as another thread about trailer music in general.

Anyone who'd like some songs can PM me about it, seeing as how we're not supposed to be sharing music through here and all.

Oh, and here's a decent resoure: Soundtrack.Net/Trailers. Only problem is the songs aren't necessarily in order for each trailer (take the AWE one, for instance), and it doesn't tell you where the songs start or have previews or anything, so you're more or less on your own for figuring out which ones you might want to try and track down.

And on a Sweeney note, I also love Alan Rickman; he's a great actor, and he's a perfect Burton character. My friend noted that "Snape and Wormtail are evil buddies in this movie", and laughed for a very long time.

... :huh: Yeah... I didn't find it all that funny either.

On note of the music:

They do have an instrumental version of "A Little Priest" tucked in there. I believe it's in the scene where Mrs. Lovett says "What about 'im? What are we gonna do about 'im?"

Have you seen 'Help I'm a fish'? Rickman-sama sings in that animated film. It was a terrible film in my opinion, but I still like listening to Rickman-sama's song. It's the equivilant to the great Scar from Lion King singing 'Be prepared' listening to Disney songs in foreign languages is a strange hobby of mine ^__^;;

Oh thank goodness o_O! But is that really a wise choice to use the same music as in AWE since it was out not so long ago. Do they seriously need to link with PotC? I think not. Despite this, I do suppose only hardcore fans such as our dear selves in Parley would make this connection.

I felt Rickman-sama was indeed a wise choice for the characterization of Snape. Perfect, dark and sinister. Alright...I just loves him [faintage].

Actually, once I figured out where I knew 'Beadle' from, I got quite a kick out of it as well. :lol:

So it WAS the X-Ray Dog group! I was thinking about our previous discussions regarding trailer music after my last post, and remembered them. It is quite interesting that there's a whole genre of movie trailer music out there. I'll be sure to check out that site...it looks like a great resource. :)

About the AWE music...someone on YouTube figured this out as well, and made their own mini-vid about it...I keep looking for it but I have no idea where it's at. Urgh. OH! Here it is. So nobody's crazy after all! Yay!

I am so completely excited for this movie. Have been since I found out they were making it! My friend Nick and I have had the date saved to see it for months. Not obsessive at all. ^_^

Woohoo thanks so much for posting that video for us Remus07-san *bows* That video was very well made and set my mind at rest, I went on to read the comments left my watchers as well *nods* I'm still left with the question as to why the trailer team decided to reuse the PotC AWE music though. Is it a deliberate attention seeking scheme to link Depp-sama with PotC?
