Barbossa; and all the things he knows...

okay so I am obviously thinking a lot about AWE, constantly :P which was to be expected...

I get so curious - what has Barbossa experienced in the past, or perhaps during his 10 years on the Black Pearl? Like Tia Dalma says, that if they want to bring Jack back from the haunted shores at World's End, they'll need a captain who knows those waters. How does Barbossa know them... his body was never there, Tia brought him back from the dead another way. It also reminds me of Barbossa saying to Jack in CotBP "you're off the edge of the map mate, here there be monsters"... and he knows that in order to find places that can't be found, you need to be lost...

so generally, Barbossa seems to know a lot about waters and shores that nobody else seem to know much about... what do you think? Is it by experience from his 10 years as a cursed pirate on the BP? I don't think so, because then Pintel and Ragetti ought to know it too... or how does he know all that? He hasn't been to the Locker, Tia Dalma makes that clear...

You bring up some good points. That would be an interesting story, with or without Jack, and could probably be the premise for another movie if they wanted to do it.

Barbossa does bring up some interesting questions in this movie. I would really like to know more about him too. He knows so much. It's mysterious.

No where is this supported in the movie, but perhaps Barbossa learned all those things when we went wherever he went while he was dead? It seems to be a part of being in the Formerly Dead People Club. ^_^

But he said some of those things before he was ever killed. Like that line about being off the edge of the map, that was before he was killed.

I think he knows a lot because not only did he go all over searching for the last coin, but since he was the Captain, he would know more than, say, Pintel or Ragetti about the waters and such. They just know what they are told, but he would know more. Afterall, he would be the one doing the telling. He would have had the advantage of maps and associations with other leaders, such as the other pirate lords, that a regular pirate wouldn't have.

Plus,he was undead, so he could travel bac and forth without as much trouble as those who were alive.

Another thing I was thinking about today; both Barbossa and Jack are of the Brethren Court; this gives alot of insight to their background. What sticks out in my mind cheifly is that this may be one reason Barbossa hated being first mate to Jack.

Or perhaps Barbossa was made a Pirate Lord while he was undead?

I'm thinking alot of this speculation may be addressed in the Brethren Court thread, but I haven't bothered to check it just yet. I apologize if there is any needless repetition. :)

It's a good question, how Barbossa knows what he knows, and how much of the facts we know about him happened while he was alive vs. undead. I think, like Jack, a lot of this is up to our imaginations to determine. But how Barbs knows so much about the end of the world, and mysterious places... its obvious that there is a lot more than Barbs than just a regular everyday pirate captain.

I can imagine Barbs being pissed he was first mate to Jack - Barbossa is older than Jack, and probably already had a larger reputation. Or not - because obviously his reputation crew when the Black Pearl (undead) was at large... "I've heard stories. She's been praying on ships for near 10 years. Never leaves any survivors." I'm sure his popularity amongst pirates grew when he was that big of a pirate threat.

I honestly cant answer any of these questions, all I can do is agree I'd like answers myself  I guess we'll never know.

Well, "Here there be monsters" was a phrase commonly written on maps in places where the territory was unexplored, kind of like labeling a place "terra incognita," that is, "unknown land." So I think Barbossa was just being clever there, as much as it may now sound like foreshadowing.

That may be, what you said about him being clever. I think that just as the actor Gregory Rush is clever in making himself on the left side of the movie frame, so his character would be able to turn any phraseology into sounding like it's something he knows for a fact and not just something he saw on a map. (Although it might have been just something he saw on a map.)

It's just neat how in pirates, phrases like "Here there be monsters" or "There'll be the Devil to pay" have a ring of truth they don't have in our world - in PotC, superstitions are real, and the people know it.

I think that is really interesting. I knew that phrase was not one that Barbossa made up, because I had heard it before, but I was not aware of it's relationship to maps. Thanks for sharing, Aurora Knight.
