For those who may not know, the MTV Movie Awards thread has been comandeered by mine and Cold's argument over who is a better villian, acting-wise and otherwise, Jones or Costello. Please only respond if you have seen both films and can make an objective decision. Thank you.

I think Nicholson deserves it, because Davy Jones was just a ruthless guy who will do whatever he wants to get whatever he wants. Costello is freaking EVIL, because he wants and craves power and doesn't want anyone to mess with what he has, or they are killed.

Most Evil Thing Done

Davy: Summoning a Kraken to do his dirty work. Yeah, a giant squid...

Costello: BREAKING LEO'S ARM OFF UNTIL HE GETS THE INFORMATION HE WANTS!

I think the choice is clear.

When people say villain, I think ruthlessly evil, not sympathetic, person that you love to hate. I felt sympathy for Davy Jones, he wasn't someone I loved to hate, I felt bad for him. He was very human in many regards, and there was no denying that he was cool, but he did not fit the view I have as what is a great, great villain. I did not feel sympathy for Jack Nicolson's character in the Departed--he was a deliciously evil character, and a great hoot, and the better "villain" material.

Frank Costello all the way.

We don't think that Jones has gutted a few men in his day? And he also commands the Kraken, which kills, I don't know, hundreds of guys. Sure, he orders people around, but so does Costello. The only thing he does in the movie is shoot two people who are tied up and blindfolded and hit DiCaprio with a shoe... then pay him. Don't get me wrong, I love both, but Jones is just a great character, he's a tragic villian, very original looking, crazy-cool new effects and everything, true human emotion behind the mask of a squid. He (Nighy) made us feel really empathetic for an octopus. I have no doubts as to who the better choice is. And, as you may read in what I've said to Cold, Departed is yet again just Nicholson being Nicholson; been there, seen that, its great, and it still is here, but have you really got anything else? I mean, do be quite honest, he gets a bit stale sometimes. Not the whole film, just certain scenes are just :blech: because we've seen it in all of his movies. Then the ending (his ending anyway) was just disappointing as hell. Still a great movie and a great character and actor, but Nighy's performance as Davy Jones in Dead Man's Chest is far superior.

You know, Wolf, each person has their own idea of what a superb villain is, what it means to be a villain and such. We're not denying here that Davy was a villain, but your continual rehashing your same statements isn't just going to make us change our minds.

To be fair the boy's just voicing his opinion and giving some reasoning behind it and I think he has a point. I'm a big fan of letting someone state their case (although half the time I then use it against them). Unfortunately I haven't seen The Departed yet so I can't voice an educated opinion but I will say that Davy Jones has one man's throat slit because he couldn't buy his soul, then had the surviving crew members bumped off just because he felt like it. I will see The Departed and will then be able to put forward my own case but I think the people that find Davy tragic or sympathetic should look back over a couple of those scenes again. It's pretty savage for a Disney film. I'm sure Hitler was a nice boy to his mother.

All well stated, Will, as always. I must say again, Jones is just quite a bit more evil. Costello is just a mob boss. A great mob boss, but a mob boss nonetheless, and also he is quite a letdown in the end there, what he reveals to Matt Damon.
