There are always curious little TV series that never get enough press. Ones that go out on a Sunday afternoon or late at night that not many people have heard of. Here's the thread to sing their praises.

Hamish Macbeth: A sweet little series from the mid 90s set in the Highlands of Scotland starring Robert Carlyle as a rural village policeman avoiding promotion. It's odd, sometimes the humour is a little off and it was eclipsed by the success of not dissimilar programmes like Ballykissangel and Monarch of the Glen. I liked this quirky little series and Robert Carlyle just shone in the role. A programme about a policeman where he never actually solved any crime.

Due South: The one with the Mountie in Chicago. It was bizarre with (again) an odd sense of humour and the greatest ever plotline for replacing a main character. Both ridiculous and sublime.

Eerie Indiana, greatest kids show ever, lots of weirdness goes on in a town and one boy tries to reveal it.

Twin Peaks, which just was the best, pretty influencial as it helped give us X-Files and is quite happily being ripped off with Lost, only without the story or any story, the last episode is the weirdest and best thing to ever be put to TV.

Oh, definitely Lexx!! It was a German/Canadian production. Strange (understatement) little scifi show about a security guard, a love slave, a robot head, and a sexy dead assassin who fly around space in a giant bug leaving complete ruin and destruction in their wake. I was a huge fan before the show wrapped up production after 4 seasons. I even traveled to Halifax, N.S. for a fan convention, including tours of the studio, etc. The actors and crew were amazing, and in general, were very open to the fans. One actor was especially noted for coming online to chat with the fans, and would often call us and yak away for ages. :)

It was a sort of love-it-or-hate-it show, but it was unique and had a very odd and sick sense of humor, and never took itself seriously. Lots of fun! :)

Due South: The one with the Mountie in Chicago.

I  "Due South"! I even bought both the soundtracks once when I was in London, since I couldn't find them here.
There were reruns on Dutch TV a while back, and I must say the series loses something in the repeat viewing, but... it's still great.

Not sure what other series I know that fit the topic...

How about "Mad Jack the Pirate" - the cartoon? That was hilarious. There were only about 8 episodes, though. It's not out on DVD, and the rare times when it's on Dutch TV now, it's dubbed. I can't stand it dubbed; you can still tell what funny things were being said, but it all gets lost in translation.

And... "Fortune Hunter". Anyone know that one? It was sort of James Bond-ish. I don't know that it was good - probably wasn't, in fact - but back when it was on TV, a dozen years ago, I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

I'm not sure how popular these shows are, but they are some of my favorites that mos tmy age have never heard of....

Becker:
Sort of a prelude to House MD from the 90's. It's about a doctor named John Becker who owns his own practice in the Bronx. He has a horrible personality, loves to complain about everything, is horribly hypocritical, but is actually a great doctor. It's shown now on KDOC, right before reruns of Cheers, and I never miss an episode. :)

The Pretender:
Antoher show from the 90's. This one is about a man named Jarod who was kidnapped as a child and taken to a place called 'The Centre' There, he is trained in 'Simulations' about things like war, medicine, sciences, and other strange things no 12 year old kid should know. But as he grows up, he begins to realize what the Centre is using him for: war strategies. He learns that his advice has killed millions, so he escapes. The show is essentially about how he travels around, looking for clues to his past, trying to learn his last name, and along the way, he becomes new people with new professions. Because he is a genious, he can be anyhthing he wants to be, and in the mean time, he helps people. It's really a great series, and for any James Denton Fans from Desperate Housewives, as he plays one of the men fromt he Centre that is trying to track Jarod down. Really, a good series with hot men and a great plot line. :D

And... I can't think of anything else... :D

Lexx, I used to watch that one too, it was pretty weird and with it being on so late at night I'd miss most of the series, so I have no idea how it ended, but that was pretty cool.

A fairly recent one, but no one seems to know it, Wonder Showzen, I got so addicted to that in the Summer of 05, it was a Sesame Street style show, presented by children and puppets with various cartoons as well following different themes, but... it wasn't a kids show as it had the most twisted adult humour I've heard in a long time, the episodes last year weren't as funny as the first ones, but the last one with bootleg puppets versus the real ones resulting in the screen being split up into about five different shows playing at exact the same time was the most bizarrely funny and headache inducing thing to hit television.

:o Now I want to see that! I love Robert Carlyle, he's fantastic. And I love Scotland as well so I would have loved to have watched that.

I loved that show too. And I felt like I was the only human being on Earth who loved it. :D The themesong was quite sweet too.

Twin Peaks

I used to hear about that show, but I was forbidden to watch it. :D I know that I liked the themesong though. (Me and my themesong obsession.)

Becker

I know of Becker, and I liked him. And now that you mention it, he is sorta like House. (Except House is more gorgeous and even more harsh )

The Pretender

Ah, this thread brings back great memories. I only watched a few episodes of The Pretender and found them entertaining.

OK, here's what I liked that no-one else did.

La Femme Nikita.
If I recall correctly, Peta Wilson played the lead role. She was a secret agenty type of person in this really strange organisation. There was a guy that she (and I) loved, named Michael...I think.
There was a really cool weapons guy that reminded me of a pirate (it was because of his stylish headwear ) and a computer genius (an absolutely gorgeous one :D) and a maniac bossman and his lady. (Lol, It was a long time ago, I can't remember all their names.)

Codename:Eternity
Aaah, I loved that show. And I know I was the only one. :D
It was about an alien in human form named Ethaniel who came to Earth to rescue it from a bad guy from his planet, Mr. Banning. He met a psychologistlady on Earth and naturally they fell in love but they didn't realise they had feelings for each other.
Ethaniel was able to touch mechanical things and use them with his brain, so he was alright when it came to technical stuff.
But the coolest part about that show (for me) was the henchman that Mr. Banning had. It was a robotguy that Ethaniel's brother created and this fantastic guy was able to morph into anyone he wished. He also had a bad case of the twitches which made him all the more lovable.
The show's finale ended really horrible, not even my favourite was in it. It was almost like they had to end it really quickly because of bad ratings or something.

Sue Thomas:FBeye
This was a great show...in my opinion. It was based on the life of a certain Sue Thomas, she's deaf but a great asset to the FBI because she's able to read lips. Levi her dog stole the show though. :D

The Moomins
When I was a kid there was the greatest cartoon EVER on TV. They translated it into Afrikaans here though, so I didn't know their English names until last year. (And yet I think I forgot most of their names already.)
There was a Moo named Moomin, and he lived in the Moo valley with his mom and dad. He had a girlfriend and a lot of good friends, one of which was the most devilish and funny miniature girl.
My favourite in this show was his best friend, a mysterious guy who lived in a tent and traveled whenever he felt like it. In English his name is Snufkin. And he was fabulous.

That's all I can think of right now.

It's probably best you didn't see Twin Peaks, I would have been about seven when I watched it, saw the first season again not too long ago and I wondered why I was allowed to see it first time around, it's so dark, very good though, and the theme is one of TV's best. :D I want to see the second season again, so much mystery and I can bearly remember who the killer turned out to be.

Well, one show in particular came to mind when I read the title to this thread, and as I read through it four other shows came to mind. Posted Image I'll just go through them in the order that I thought of them.

Thanks. This was a half-hour sit com about the pilgrims. It was just so weird, I loved it. Apparently I was the only one, though, because it was only on for *goes and checks imdb* 6 episodes. It was great, though. One scandal for the pilgrims was that the family built a whole extra room onto their cabin for the grandmother! The decadence! Posted Image

Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates. This show was awesome!!! Oh my gosh, it was so formative for my childhood. I actually think I learned more from it than I ever did from Sesame Street. It's because they really did not dumb down Captain Hook's speech for kids. It was awesome. I especially liked any episode where Hook caught Peter and there was no hope left. Yeah, I was already messed up, even as a little kid, lol.

Jack of All Trades. This show was AWESOME! Starred Bruce Campbell, what what! It was about an American spy and a British spy trying to stop the spread of French imperialism in the Pacific in 1801. It took place on an island called Pulau Pulau. I think it may not have caught on because people did not know what to make of it. It was kind of a comedy, but kind of an action show. I loved it, personally. I REALLY wish they'd release it on DVD so I could watch it whenever I want. I guess a peak at the kind of show it was is that they cast Verne Troyer as Napolean. Posted Image

Cleopatra 2525. This aired with Jack of All Trades, but it ran for a bit longer. I actually liked Jack better, but this was good, too. It's about a girl from our time who was frozen and woke up in the year 2525. Robots have taken over the Earth, and humans have been driven underground. You know, the theme song says it all better than I could.

In the year 2525 they're women with the will to survive.
Fighting war a brand new day. Nothin's gonna get in their way.

And in the year 2525 three women keep hope alive.
Joinin' forces to relaim the Earth. Looking ahead to humankind's rebirth.

They traveled through underground tunnels, and could shoot webs out of their gauntlets. Kind of like Spider-Man, I guess. It was cool. :)

She Spies. Haha. Well, this is probably the one out of the five that I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that I liked, because it was pretty stupid. Still, it was sort of an action show that made fun of itself. I liked it, anyway. It was kind of like Charlie's Angels, except the three girls were ex-criminals who were working for the government to be out of prison.

Well, that was a long post. Wonder if anybody'll actually read it all. Posted Image

Sandokan: This was a cartoon series made by the same team that made Dogtanian and Willy Fogg about Sandokan the pirate tiger of Malaysia. I actually have one of the original cels that I won in a drawing competition when I was eleven.

Space Precinct: Aliens and humans living together in occasional harmony. The thin blue line between sci-fi and utterly laughable. It was great.

The Moomins

omg i loved the moomins! i realy miss them.

i also loved the smurfs (the little blue people). it was about a town of smurfs who lived in mushrooms. there was a papa smurf who was the town leader, a lot of boy smurfs, one girl smurf and one baby smurf. there was also a evil human called gargamel and he had a cat. gargamel tried to kill all the smurfs and the programmes were all about how the smurfs spoiled his plans. The smurfs had a great theme tune aswell.

the smurfs song, the video isnt actually of the smurfs, but it is a vid of people singing the song. its realy funny

Jack of All Trades and Cleopatra 2525

Tomb, I loved those shows! The theme for Cleo was the greatest and it was a very Xena-spinoff show. ;) I love how though, Gina Torres (who played Hel) was the actress who played Cleopatra on Xena, and the actress--Jennifer Sky, who played the title role in 2525, played Amarice in Xena.

I guess I got way too much enjoyment out of it.

I'm going to go and mention another Bruce Campbell show (because the man is awesome!)--Brisco County, Jr. The theme song for the show was amazing (and now ripped and used during little spots during the Olympics), and I loved it. While Firefly is a Sci-Fi western, this one really was a western with sci-fi. The characters and the actors were just hilarious, especially Christian Clemenson as the lawyer Socrates Poole (and now plays a recurring character--a lawyer on Boston Legal), and I loved the frequent guest star John Pyper-Ferguson as Pete Hutter. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the show--it was quirky, and just like Xena, Hercules and well, about in the same way that Jack of All Trades was to some extent. Besides...I'll love this show forever for pitching Brisco and Bowler against a group of pirates without a ship. I miss this one so much now. :(

Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates. This show was awesome!!!

I was wondering if you would mention this, tomb! I also loved this show as a kid. I don't remember it very well because I didn't watch it religiously, but I really loved the episodes I saw. The only one I remember was the one where the mermaids kidnapped Wendy and tried to turn her into a mermaid. Don't ask me how.

And Captain Hook was awesome, but then, he generally is in any Peter Pan movie/show.

I remember Space Precinct, Gerry Anderson's attempt at live action, it was quite enjoyable but I'd forgotten about it until not so long ago as I was looking through some books and stuff and found a small pile of the comics, not a show which I can ever see being repeated, but that was fun back in the day.

Dogtanian and the Muskerhounds, that was great, I can't remember so much of the episodes but that themetune was infectious: Click here!

I used to watch so many cartoons, some are obvious like He-Man and Turtles, Transformers, everyone knows those, but the ones which cause people to go "huh?' at me while not knowing what they were...

Thundercats: Thunder, thunder, Thundercats, hoooooo! that one was the awesomeness, a bunch of human/cat hybrids who swords and other weapons go into battle against the evil Mum-Ra, this weird old mummy dude who with power can become this huge scary faced monster guy, there was Lion-O who was the leader, he was like a lion... and Cheetra, who... yeah, and... oh, who the cat babe? and there was Snarf too, the little red furball thing, who anyone who watches Robot Chicken would have seen being pulled into a Chinese restaurant, and Lion-O was on Family Guy once using the Eye of Thundara to watch the cat babe on the toilet. And just for nostalgia: The mighty themetune! I had so many of those toys, and at least maybe now I'll stop being asked what t-shirt I have in that picture.

Defenders of the Earth: The Phantom, Flash Gordon, um...there was a magician guy in it, and a hunter or something I think, and they all fight off Ming the Merciless, that was one pretty cool team.

Bravestarr: It was like a western, only set in the future, so instead of just pistols they have laser guns, and Bravestarr is the sheriff of this town and he has to fight people since he's the lawman, his main villain was Tex Hex I think his name was, he had this freaky skeleton face, I didn't really notice back in the day but that was actually a fairly dark cartoon, especially for kids, I want to watch it again but there's currently no way to do so. :( Sing a long with it

Dangermouse: Someone out there must know this one, Dangermouse and his accomplice Penfold live under Baker Street I think, and they go out and solve mysteries, it's pretty funny stuff and was probably the best cartoon of the 80's, yep, all these cartoons are pretty old now, but modern ones just don't look as good as these.
