Some of you older folks might remember this song. Heard it again on the radio today, and all I could think of was Jack...and anyone he may have left behind. It's also a rather easy song to alter to fit Jack....

Brandy (You're A Fine Girl) (Looking Glass)

There's a port on a western bay,
And it serves a hundred ships a day.
Lonely sailors pass the time away,
And talk about their homes.

And there's a girl in this harbor town,
And she works layin' whiskey down.
They say "Brandy, fetch another round",
She serves them whiskey and wine.

The sailors say "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl),
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl).
"Yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea".

Brandy wears a braided chain,
Made of finest silver from the North of Spain;
A locket that bears the name
Of the man that Brandy loves.

He came on a summer's day,
Bringin' gifts from far away.
But he made it clear he couldn't stay,
No harbor was his home.

The sailor said " Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl),
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl).
"But my life, my lover, my lady - is the sea".

Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes
When he told his sailor stories.
She could feel the ocean foam rise,
She saw its ragin' glory.
But he had always told the truth, lord, he was an honest man,
And Brandy does her best to understand.

At night when the bars close down,
Brandy walks through a silent town.
And loves a man who's not around,
She still can hear him say...

She hears him say " Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl),
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl).
"But my life, my lover, my lady - is the sea".

Yeah - that song just reminds me of Jack. I can imagine Jack winning a gal's heart by bringing her gifts from far away and impressing her with his 'pirate' stories. And we all know of Jack's love for the Pearl, and by extension, the sea. There is something about the original song that just makes me think about a sailor's - or pirate's - life of roaming the sea. The freedom that comes along with it - but the loneliness too, for I'm sure many a sailing man returned to port, only to find his favorite girl wedded to another.

So - what about Jack. Based on the first movie, do you think he had a 'Brandy' in every port - a girl who really loved him and pined for him, but who knew that his ship and the sea came first? I can't count Scarlett and Giselle - they don't seem the type - but Anamaria...yeah. I think she may have truly cared for Jack. I love the last scene when Jack is caressing the Pearl's wheel - Anamaria's expression is priceless. She sees, and seemingly understands, his connection to the ship, and it touches her. Of course, then he calls everyone scabrous dogs and all  , but there is that one moment when her feelings for Jack seem to be reflected in her expression...

Anna (You're A Fine Girl) (about Anamaria and Jack)

There's a port on a Tortugan bay,
And it serves a hundred ships a day.
Lonely pirates pass the time away,
And talk about their homes.

And there's a girl in this harbor town,
And she works layin' whiskey down.
They say "Anna, fetch another round",
She serves them whiskey and rum.

The pirates say "Anna, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl),
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl).
"Yeah, your eyes could steal a pirate from the sea."

Anna wears a braided chain,
Made of finest silver from the North of Spain;
A locket that bears the name
Of the man that Anna loves.

He came on a summer's day,
Bringin' gifts from far away.
But he made it clear he couldn't stay,
No harbor was his home.

The pirate said " Anna, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl),
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl).
"But my life...my lover...my lady - is the sea."

Yeah, Anna used to watch his eyes
When he told his pirate stories.
She could feel the ocean foam rise,
She saw its ragin' glory.
But he never told the truth, lord, he was a dishonest man,
And Anna-maria tries to understand.

At night when the pubs close down,
Anna walks through a silent town.
And loves a man who's not around,
She still can hear him say...

She hears him say " Anna, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl),
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl).
"But my life...my lover...my lady - is the sea."

LOL!

I thought about Jack, too, when I heard that song like, 6 months ago.

For some reason I also thought of Jack when I heard "Carry On My Wayward Son", too. I don't know why...

LOL - yeah - I can see that...Jack is the Ultimate Wayward...something....

There are a lot of songs that remind me of Jack...like all the sea shanties about poxy sailors...

Then there is Southern Cross by CSN...parts of that song remind me of Jack...

Think about how many times
I have fallen

"This is the day that you will always remember as the day that you...aaaarrrrrrggghhh!"

Spirits are using me
larger voices callin'.

"The gold calls..."

So I'm sailing for tomorrow

"Bring me that horizon..."

I have my ship
And all her flags are a flyin'
She is all that I have left...

"What the Black Pearl really is...is freedom..."

So, yeah...lots of songs out there remind me of Jack...or the movie. On another site we discussed how much Jack fits into the words of Sympathy for the Devil by the Stones.

Please allow me to introduce myself
I’m a man of wealth and taste

Sounds like Jack (in his mind), eh??

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name

"CAPTAIN...CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow."

But what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

"I must admit, Jack, I thought I had ye figured. It turns out you're a hard man to predict."

Let me please introduce myself
I’m a man of wealth and taste...

WELL, HE'D like us to believe that... <_<

Of course, the rest of the song seems to apply more to Barbossa... :P but still...

This song never fails to remind me of anything piratical *watch out, it's long!*

"A Pirate I Was Meant To Be"

A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!
We're a band of vicious pirates
A'sailing out to sea
When ye hear our raucous singing
Ye'll be sure to turn and flee!
A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!
We're thieving balladeers.
A gang of cutthroat mugs.
To fight us off ye can't use guns!
Prepare to lose ye slugs!
A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!
We'll fight you in the harbor.
We'll battle you on land.
But when you meet singing pirates...
They'll be more than you can stand!
A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!
We're a pack a´ scurvy sea dogs.
Have we pity? Not a dram!
We all eat roasted garlic...
...then sing from the diaphragm!
A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!
If ye try ta fight us...
...you will get a nasty whackin´!
If ya disrespect our singing´...
...we will feed ya to a kraken!
A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!
We're troublesome corsairs!
And we've come to steal your treasures!
We would shoot you on the downbeat...
...but we have to rest five measures.
A pirate I was meant to be!
Trim the sails and roam the sea!
We love to raid,
Pillage and plunder.
We're as fast as lightning,
And as menacing as thunder.
A pirate i was meant to be
Trim the sails and roam the sea!

Ah Monkey Island, I miss thee so!
